Humble beginnings to global impact
From a modest start to becoming a formidable force in the global energy landscape, the WE story encapsulates a journey of relentless innovation and strategic foresight. As the world shifts towards sustainable solutions, WE have adeptly maneuvered through the complexities of the energy sector, emerging as a leader in renewable energy and sustainable building practices. This blog explores the historical milestones of WElink, tracing our growth from a pioneering startup in Dublin to a key player pushing the boundaries of technology and sustainability on the world stage.
2007: The Foundation in Dublin
WElink’s journey began in 2007 in Dublin, Ireland, where WE started as a pioneering force in product sourcing and managing supply chains in Asia. This foundational year marked our company’s entry into the global market with a focus on efficiency and innovation, setting a solid base for our future expansions.
2010: Strategic partnership with CTIEC
Three years after inception, WElink took a significant leap forward by partnering with China Triumph International Engineering Co. Ltd (CTIEC). This partnership was crucial in elevating our company’s investment capabilities and expanding its technological reach, particularly in the solar energy sector.
2013: Expanding and becoming a global solar energy player
By 2013, WElink had significantly expanded its scope, enabling WElink Energy to deliver 750 MW of solar PV assets across the globe. This was a substantial achievement that underscored our commitment to renewable energy and our capability to handle large-scale projects.
2016: Leading in Iberian and Italian markets
WE continued to strengthen our market presence by dominating the solar PV sector in the Iberian Peninsula and Italy. The strategic investments made during this period helped solidify our reputation as a leader in renewable energy within these key European markets.
2018: Diversifying into energy-efficient housing
In 2018, WElink sold the 46 MW Ourika project to Allianz, a move that not only expanded our financial footprint but also paved the way for its venture into innovative, energy-efficient housing through WElink Homes. This year also saw the strengthening of our management and operational teams, enhancing reach and efficiency.
2021: The Solara4 project
The energy landscape saw a significant boost in 2021 when WElink energised the 219 MW Solara4 project. This project played a crucial role in unleashing a pipeline of projects across Southern Europe, emphasizing our ongoing impact in the European energy sector. It’s also the largest merchant PV in Portugal and has proven operational capability. Solara4 1TWh expansion is a unique hybrid project in Europe, and of national importance in Portugal.
2022: Expansion into Africa
WElink’s global ambitions took a further leap in 2022 as it ventured into Africa. Collaborating with top-tier partners and leveraging a team combining African and European expertise, WE are all set to capture new opportunities and foster sustainable energy solutions in a burgeoning market.
2023: Innovation in battery energy storage systems
Most recently, in 2023, WElink broke new ground in the energy sector by launching projects in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This initiative, known as WElink BESS, is pioneering the transition to energy storage solutions, highlighting the company’s forward-thinking approach in supporting global energy transitions. WE are charged and energised to execute our pipeline of 5GW+ in Portugal, Spain, Italy and Africa.
Better, brighter future ahead
From our inception, WE have been driven by a vision of sustainability and innovation. What started as a small, ambitious venture has evolved into a global leader in renewable energy. The journey of WElink is a testament to the power of determination, strategic growth, and a commitment to a greener future.
In the next phase of our journey, WE are set to deliver an impressive 4GW pipeline of Solar PV, Wind, Storage, and Hybrid projects. This ambitious expansion will span across Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa, targeting both utility-scale and commercial & industrial (C&I) sectors. This is not just an incremental step; it’s a giant leap towards revolutionizing the energy landscape.
With a current portfolio exceeding 1GW, WElink has already established a solid foundation in the renewable energy market. Now, WE are poised to accelerate our development efforts, aiming to scale up our operations significantly with the addition of a remarkable 4GW pipeline. This expansion underscores our unwavering commitment to addressing global energy challenges and fostering sustainable development.
As WE continue to expand our footprint worldwide, WE remain dedicated to our philosophy: never forgetting our beginnings as WE build a sustainable future. This commitment not only drives our ongoing projects but inspires each of us to give our 100% in achieving the WElink purpose – Better Planet Now.
