Chicago

USA

As part of its long term strategy for the US market, WElink Group, through its subsidiary Emerald Living, was selected by US Steel as the preferred bidder of its famous South Works property in South Chicago. Once the largest steel mill in the world, the 440-acre property represented an unparalleled opportunity to re-develop the last remaining large lakeshore property close to downtown Chicago, and a unique platform for WElink to roll out elements of its modular platform across the continental US

Working with Tier-1 consultants across numerous disciplines, WElink undertook a rigorous due diligence of the site. Over the case of the 18-month review process, WElink actively engaged with local community leaders and the City of Chicago in developing its plan for the site. Led by the Chicago office of HOK International, WElink created a world-class master-plan for the site incorporating residential, commercial and amenities throughout, centred on a specific objective of integrating the surrounding communities into this district-transformational project.

Following the diligence process, WElink took the decision to step back from the project though its ambitions for this site in Chicago and other projects in the US remains undimmed.
